Investigating why Couch Cushions Sag

When selecting the fabric and style of a new lounge suite, it is crucial to consider its future environment to prevent the seat cushions from becoming saggy or stretched over time. We spoke to Zepel’s Auckland-based Upholstery Specialist, Robert Street, who provided insight into the problem and offered some solutions.

WHY DOES THE FABRIC ON A NEWLY UPHOLSTERED SOFA APPEAR STRETCHED AND OUT OF SHAPE AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS OF USE?

There are several factors that could contribute to this:

Synthetic components are generally stable and unlikely to stretch; however, natural materials such as cotton and linen can absorb moisture from the air and relax over time. Additionally, Zepel evaluates each fabric’s seam slippage when evaluating its quality, which means that any possible issues like the weave stretching are highlighted. Fabrics that fail this test are identified and resolved before being added to our range of products.

WHAT IS SEAM SLIPPAGE?

Seam slippage, or the separation of yarns in a fabric, usually occurs along a seam or joint in a garment. The yarns do not actually break, but they pull apart leaving an unsightly gap.

SO, WHAT COULD BE THE CAUSE?

Let's rule out fabric stretch as a possible cause and look at what else could be at play.

1.       Foam

High-quality foam loses 5-7% its loft within three months of use, which could be a contributing factor. Some manufacturers use pre-crushed foam, which prevents this loss of loft but can be more expensive, however, it's worth it because you really do get what you pay for in furniture.

2.       The Design

Couch design is one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a new couch and there are two main types: cushion seat and fixed seat.

A cushion seat is designed to be flexible, so the sides of the cushion pull upwards when you sit on it. This means that there is no need for extra fabric in the back of the cushion base, which can cause puddling after sitting down.

A fixed seat requires an allowance of extra fabric in the back of the base cushion to allow for movement when you sit down. This extra fabric moves forward as you stand up, compensating for the foam compressing when you sit on the couch. If this extra fabric does not move back to the base of the cushion fast enough, it will be trapped leaving a saggy look once you stand.

WHICH SEAT STYLE IS BEST?

When you sit down on a couch or chair, the fabric bends slightly to accommodate your body weight. This flexing helps to prevent tears from forming that would otherwise occur if the fabric were not flexible.

A fixed seat is more susceptible to this because the fabric doesn't have the same give as a cushion style does. Fixed seats tend to have cleaner lines, which are preferred by designers and architects for their beautiful look, but they require more maintenance than a cushion style to keep looking their best.

To keep the fabric in place, a fixed seat requires regular ‘dressing’. This means the fabric of the seat needs to be swept back and tucked under the back cushion. Wider upholstered furniture pieces require more frequent dressing than narrower ones. Although ‘dressing’ isn't often mentioned, the manufacturer and/or specifier should educate the customer on this before their purchase.

IN SUMMARY:

New furniture is an investment that will last many years. So, take time to consider the quality of the materials, the maintenance required for optimal preservation, and whether it is well suited to your lifestyle.
