Melbourne Design Week is an annual celebration that honours the Australian design industry. It takes place in Melbourne, the country's design capital, and features over 100 events. We spoke to Bonnie Mack, a Product Developer based in Melbourne, who shared her favourite five exhibitions from this year's fair.
Melbourne Design Week 2023
The theme for this year's Melbourne Design Week was "Design the World You Want," posing the question to contributors: "How can we infuse spaces with energy?" According to Bonnie, many exhibitors embraced materials that fostered connection, warmth, and togetherness, as they interpreted the theme. Notably, sustainability took a backseat, with a shift towards embedding the concept within tangible experiences and meticulous material considerations. This exemplified the industry's growing expectation of responsible design practices.

Since its inception in 2022, Design Fair has swiftly established itself as a pivotal event within the Design Week program. Held at the city's Convention and Exhibition Centre, this colossal exhibition presented the very best in design. One of its standout features was the opportunity to interact with local designers and gallerists at their stalls, adding an extra dimension to the event.

Villages
Villages
Ceramic artist Sarah Nedovic and art director Stephanie Stamatis collaborated to present this stunning exhibition, which celebrated the geological and anthropological concepts of a village. Visitors were warmly invited to light a candle within the space, immersed in an ambiance of ceramic artworks that reimagined nostalgic land memories while inspiring hope for a bright future.
Nahnan
Nahnan
Injalak Arts and Modern Times collaborated to present Nahnan, an exhibition that showcased fishing nets, baskets, and wall hangings meticulously woven from pandanus leaves by talented First Nations women from Gunbalanya in the Northern Territory. The materials used in the exhibition are collected solely by "daluks," community members who possess specialized knowledge about the land's flora and its proper maintenance.
Open Table
Open Table
Esteemed interior designers Flack Studio hosted the Open Table exhibition, featuring nine collaborative artworks. The exhibition offered a captivating sensory experience with its interplay of light, sound, and texture. It was an incredible experience to visit their studio, especially after watching Troy Sivan's home tour designed by Flack Studio on Architectural Digest. The discovery of Mokum fabrics in their sample section added to the excitement of visiting their studio.
Weaving Circle
Weaving Circle
Numbulwar Numburindi Arts, from Australia's Northern Territory, set up a pop-up studio with Agency Projects at the Tait showroom. We had the chance to join artists Rose Wilfred, Joy Wilfred, and Janette Murrungun in their Weaving Circle. They taught us how to harvest, dry, and dye pandanus leaves using local plants, and we even tried our hand at weaving.
