A Guide to Cleaning Curtains

Custom-made draperies are an investment in your interior. Playing such an important role in the look and feel of your home, it's important that you care for them appropriately to maintain their appearance and functionality.

Over time, curtains can grow mildew, become dusty, and marked from dirty hands so it's important to regularly clean your curtains. While cleaning your curtains in the washing machine sounds like an easy way to revome dust and stains, it's not always appropriate. There are important steps you should follow to ensure your curtains remain in good condition.

The following tips apply to most curtain fabrics, though some may require specific cleaning instructions. It’s also important to be aware of the likelihood of a small amount of shrinkage to occur, depending on the fabric composition.

PRE CLEANING

It’s wise to understand and follow the care instructions that accompany your curtains to protect the fabric, and ensure it lasts as long as possible.

If the instructions indicate that you can machine wash, always use a cold cycle and mild detergent. We highly recommend hand washing your curtains to protect delicate fabrics and pleats. If curtains are embellished with decorative details, it is often safest to wash them by hand rather than in the washing machine.

Before you clean your curtains, vacuum them to remove loose dust and debris. Take the curtains down carefully, (removing all hooks and rings), and check the colourfastness by testing a small area on the back of the hem before washing.

DURING CLEANING

Using a mild detergent, gently wash the curtain without soaking or rubbing. Due to the amount of fabric you are cleaning, a bathtub can be an ideal location for hand washing. Bleach should not be used for any part of this process as it will break down the fabric.

AFTER CLEANING

Hang your curtains by their hooks on a line that can bear the weight of damp fabric, and dry in the shade.

Do not put your curtains in the dryer, use pegs, or hang them over anything as this will leave marks on the fabric.

Rehang the curtains or iron them on a warm setting, (if your fabric allows). The weight of the curtains will help any creases to come out naturally.

A vacuum cleaner attachment can be used to keep your curtains dust-free between laundering.

CLEANING DIFFERENT CURTAIN TYPES

Unlined curtains

Unlined curtains are typically low-maintenance and can be washed at home. Always consult the care label or hand wash in cold water using mild detergent.

Lined curtains

We recommend taking your curtains to a specialist dry-cleaner to avoid damaging the fabric or construction.

Wash lined curtains in cold water with a mild detergent. Firstly check whether the curtain and lining are made from different materials. If so, one side of the fabric may shrink and pucker following laundering. Where possible, remove the lining and wash it separately.

Voile curtains

Voile curtains are often made of light fabrics which are easy to take down and hand-wash in cold water. Once dry, you can give voile curtains a quick warm iron.

Thermal Curtains

Hand-wash thermal curtains in cold water, taking care not to let the thermal coating stick to itself. Don't rub or wring the curtains as you wash them, and never apply heat as the backing will melt.

Caring for your curtains will ensure a longer lifespan and healthy happier home all round.
