Zepel recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Melbourne based designer Biasol on the launch of bouclé design Fontaine. This multi-award winning studio creates pieces that endure time, with classic, elegant appeal, quality, and technical precision. The Comoda armchair was selected as the perfect piece to best represent our bouclé fabric, Fontaine. The knotted yarns and luxurious surface of this fabric beautifully move along the curved, voluminous lines of the Comoda armchair, creating nurturing comfort. This multidisciplinary studio was established by Jean Pierre Biasol and reflect his design visions that harness innovation and function. We meet with Jean Pierre to discuss his aesthetic motivations and products.

In Collaboration: Biasol
How would you describe the overall vision of the Biasol brand?
Biasol is a progressive studio and brand — established with traditional values and passion for local craftsmanship with timeless design aesthetics. Collaboration is at the heart of our projects and fundamental to the way we design interiors, building typologies, brands, and products.
How do your products and services reflect this?
Our approach to design draws on many complementary disciplines to create experiences that surpass expectation, harnessing intuitive, beautiful, and highly engaging environments, products, and brands. Our team of architects, interior designers, product designers, graphic designers and brand strategists enables us to create unique holistic experiences as one end outcome.
Can you give us an insight into your journey as an interior designer and how you arrived at combining your skills with innovative product design?
I had just returned from studying in Italy to Melbourne in the peak of the GFC and eager to begin my design career with a design studio. Unfortunately, no design studios were hiring, it was a challenging and difficult time. Having experienced these difficult times, we wanted to give others an opportunity to be part of our studio, and so through the support of friends and family some opportunities arose, and I decided to setup Biasol Studio in 2012. Studying in Italy gave me a lot of exposure to many of the design greats which really plays a significant part in influencing the way we think as a studio. Many of these design greats fused and blurred the lines between Art, Architecture, Interiors, Products, Graphics and Branding. A concept which strongly resonated with me and the very foundation of why we set up the studio — we see design as one, whether we are working on an interior, building, product, or brand.
Zepel are thrilled that you have collaborated with us on our bouclé design, Fontaine. In your view, why have boucle’s created such an impact recently?
We’re thrilled to be collaborating with you, thank you so much! We love the soft textural feeling of bouclé in general and have no doubt it’s broad application and visual characteristics makes bouclé so popular. In particularly for our modular sofa collection, we love how the bouclé embraces the voluptuous curves of the Comoda, its textural essence just makes it feel so warm and welcoming.
Can you describe your inspirations behind this sofa collection?
Ultimately, Comoda for us is a balance between comfort and aesthetics inspired by the Danish concept of ‘hygge’. We wanted to design a visually compelling statement piece, aesthetically beautiful, modular, generous in proportions, without compromising on comfort and made locally here in Melbourne. In fact, Comoda is named after the feminine conjugation of the Italian word for ‘comfortable’.
Our bouclé’s by Casamance have also caught your interest. Is there a process when you select a suite of designs for your furniture pieces? (How do you combine furniture aesthetics and fabrics).
Naturally, bouclé is textural and a great way to add texture into any space. Depending on the product or application, our considerations to form, function, textiles’ characteristics, and colours generally narrow down the selection. We love bouclé though, especially on our seating range — Comoda and Tre Mezzo stools.
What are you currently drawn in relation to colour, textures, and style? And what have you found has been popular with your customer base?
We’re currently drawn to the earthy, neutral colours such as tans, beiges and caramels. However, can see a higher interest in brighter colours with texture like bouclé being specified which is really exciting, and truly adds to the statement Comoda aesthetics.

What are your future aspirations for Biasol?
We’re continuously evolving and want to expand on our current furniture offering as well as launch some new collections this year, (along with an online store). Ideally, looking forward to taking Melbourne made, internationally!
Can you give us some insights into your future projects/furniture collections and their direction/vision?
We love modernising traditional elements with a sense of simplicity and elegance throughout the space and products we create. 2022 is shaping up to be an exciting year for our studio and our products — we are currently developing six new collections across dining chairs and tables, sofas and armchairs, coffee and side tables, stools, and benches along with decorative objects for your home.
